Challenge Day #28

This poem is a one in a series of poems for the month of April. I am currently involved in two writing challenges, and like a fool or a genius, you decide....... I combined the two challenges. I am attempting to write a poem a day ~ with the corresponding letter of the day. On Sunday, however, I do not need to comply with the A to Z rule and I'm free to write my poem without restrictions.

Only 2 days left! Wow.

1. A to Z Challenge: Blog each day with the corresponding letter of the day, except on Sunday
2. NaPoWriMo: Write a poem a day

Shakespeare's Birthday

William Shakespeare's actual birthdate has been long disputed, but it is believe to fall around this time. I have always loved his work and am fascinated by his mastery of the English language. He has left us with so many amazing treasures and we still draw from his inspirations.

My favorites plays:

Midsummer Nights Dream
Much Ado About Nothing
Romeo and Juliet

My favorite sonnet:

Sonnet CXVI

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O, no! it is an ever-fixed mark,
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
      If this be error and upon me proved,
     I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

Here is a poem that I wrote in honor of The Bard: Fate

Also, if you like poetry, check out these amazing poets at With Real Toads; today's poem prompt was to write a piece in honor of this extraordinary man.

Do you like Shakespeare? What are some of your favorite works?

[Blog Design Tips] Reducing Right Click on Your Images

Hannah from With Real Toads asked: ...I was wondering how you went about hindering copy/paste ability from your readers? I'm Word Press so I don't know if it'll work the same?

As bloggers, we work very hard trying to make our blogs unique and one way we do that is with the images that we take and use for our posts. What's aggravating is when all this hard work is "right clicked" away. To reduce and deter the casual viewer from simply right clicking and copying your images, here is a way to disable that feature. Please note that there are ways around this, so for the savvy user, they can still grab your image.

Unfortunately, I am currently only working on the blogger platform, but if you are a wordpress blogger, try the link below. Let me know if it works. If not, I will look for a solution.

For Wordpress, I suggest trying this plugin No Right Click Images Plugin

For Blogger users, follow the steps below.

1. Copy this code

<script language=javascript>
<!--

var message="This function is NOT allowed!";

///////////////////////////////////
function clickIE4(){
if (event.button==2){
alert(message);
return false;
}
}

function clickNS4(e){
if (document.layers||document.getElementById&&!document.all){
if (e.which==2||e.which==3){
alert(message);
return false;
}
}
}

if (document.layers){
document.captureEvents(Event.MOUSEDOWN);
document.onmousedown=clickNS4;
}
else if (document.all&&!document.getElementById){
document.onmousedown=clickIE4;
}

document.oncontextmenu=new Function("alert(message);return false")

// -->
</script>

2. Go to Layout and click on Add a Gadget

3. Choose the HTML/JavaScript option

4. Paste the code and save

You can change the message by altering the highlighted text that reads "This function is NOT allowed!"

You may also want to disable the image enlargement feature.

I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you have any questions. I am eager to learn and help fellow bloggers.

Please let me know if this works for you. I did this awhile back, so I may be forgetting something.

[Blog Design Tip] Disable Image Enlargement Feature

In the last Blog Design Post, I showed you how to keep visitors from copying/right clicking your images.

However, you may have noticed that when you click on the image, another window opens containing your image, and visitors can easily snag your picture from there. To prevent this, you will need to do the following when you post.

Unfortunately, you will need to do this each time you use an image in your blog post. But, it's worth it.

1. After posting your image, you will need to click the HTML link

2. You will need to find and delete the highlighted sections. The actual addresses for your images will vary.

3. That's it!

I hope that you found this helpful. If you have any questions, let me know. I'm still new to things, but I love learning about code and helping fellow bloggers!

Let me know if this worked.

[poem] Beautiful Me

This poem was written for my children. I would love to have this published one day, but that's not easy....oh well. They love it and I hope you enjoy it too.

Beautiful Me

My skin is different of that I'm sure
It does not look the same as yours

My eyes are dark like the starry night
While yours are pale like a pool of light

I told my mother my wish one night
I wished my skin was nice and light

She smiled and said, Now that won't do,
For how would the world look without you?

We are all different in our own special way
Bringing to this world something new every day

Think of the rainbow high in the sky
A beautiful sight, can you tell me why?

Yes! it's the colors that make it so grand
Colors like you, do you understand?

The world wouldn't be such a wonderful place
If everyone had the same sort of face

So think of what I've said to you
And know that you are beautiful too

Then mommy gave me a kiss goodnight
And quietly turned off the bedroom light

I curled up real tight all snug in my bed
And thought about what my mommy had said

The world is a colorful place indeed
With all kinds of people like you and me

And with a smile on my face
I finally see.....

Beautiful me.......Beautiful me.

Challenge Day 21

This poem is a one in a series of poems for the month of April. I am currently involved in two writing challenges, and like a fool or a genius, you decide....... I combined the two challenges. I am attempting to write a poem a day ~ with the corresponding letter of the day. On Sunday, however, I do not need to comply with the A to Z rule and I'm free to write my poem without restrictions. I've now past the halfway point, but it's definitely getting harder and harder.

You Washed What??!!

Read on and you will see......

Now, I haven't mentioned it to you before, but we are embarking on the nightmarish attempt to renovate our kitchen/bath and Florida room all at once. So what does that mean? Psycho mom trying to multitask and be as efficient as possible....scary.... doubly scary, since I am also trying to pump out a poem a day for a challenge I'm participating in.

Anyway, before the contractor can start demolition, I need to pack up the kitchen, bathroom, Florida room and the basement that is located under my kitchen....fun. Not!

So, the other day after our vacation, I decided that I would quickly get the wash done before the day was out. This way I can pack the basement without all the clothes strewn about. Got lots to do and no time to do it.

The kids helped by throwing their clothes down the laundry chute (which is apparently not legal here anymore....shhhhh) and I did a quick sweep of their rooms because inevitably there is always something that they miss.

I soon separated the monstrous pile that sat in the laundry room and decided to wash the darks first. Plop...in goes the Tide detergent pod and the darks are on their way to being cleaned.

About an hour later, while I was chatting on the phone (and not paying attention), I unloaded and reloaded the machines and the darks went into the dryer....settings pressed and off I went to pack.

Once the kids went to bed, I made my way to the dryer. I always love the way clothes smell right out of the dryer....and they're soooo warm.....and.....OH MY GOD!!!!

Sitting there all nice and shiny ~ and warm, was my son's.....iPhone!

I was ready to go upstairs and scream at him, but I soon realized that it could have been in the jeans that were in his room ~ that HE didn't throw down. So, who's to blame?!

Me. Psycho mom.

As I stood there in utter disbelief, I remembered that my friend just recently had to replace her phone because it didn't work after falling into the water for just a few seconds.....and yes, she tried the rice thing....it was still messed up.

My son's phone went through wash, rinse, spin.....rinse & spin again and dry on high heat!!!!

What to do? What to do?

Well, after googling possible solutions, I took the SIM card out and decided to let it sit on my nightstand and "dry" for a few days (although it already went through the dryer - how much drier can it get). Ugh....feeling really bad.

The next morning I had to tell my son that the 82 pictures he took of the duck at Universal Studios may be gone....and the 50+ pictures he took of bugs and flowers might also be lost ~ forever. He actually took it very well....hmmmm, could he be maturing? Or, maybe he did throw it down. Very interesting.

Anyhow, yesterday we decided to try out the phone.

My hubby plugged it in and......

It started to charge. Yippee! An hour later, it was back. All the pictures, contact info, text messages, speaker, ....everything, and we didn't lose a single duck. Phew!! The only noticeable thing was on certain images you can make out a few starry lights, but hey, whatever....I'll take that.

Well, I'm so very happy that the iPhone god was kind and merciful. Needless to say, I will remember to check all pockets from now on. We may not be as lucky next time.

Have you ever washed your phone? How about dropping it in the toilet?

Deja Vu? Liebster Award 4 & 5

Although blogging has taken over my life, I must say that I absolutely enjoy it and I've met some incredible people (okay, not physically met, but virtually).

I never realized that blogging would open up a whole new world....a subculture of people ~ communities filled with photographers, poets, chefs and fashion and nutrition experts...just to name a few. But no matter how different we are...no matter what area we identify with, we are all passionate and we are all bloggers. We put ourselves out there for the world to see....to empathize with....to criticize and to join.

Like any field of work or study (blogging is work....for those who don't know), it's nice to be recognized by your fellow peers. I must thank Zainab and Jessica of Blog of a Bluegrass Belle for nominating my blog again for a Liebster Award.

I think my favorite part of this award each time I receive it is answering the questions and reading everyone else's responses.....here we go! Again! You can read more about the Liebster award here.

Three for Me

Yes, I'm still here.....I haven't totally fallen off the planet...I've just been in Orlando with the family on a much needed vacation. Although I haven't been able to post "posts", I have been able to keep up with the A to Z challenge and the NaPoWriMo Challenge, although it's been a bit difficult......try composing poems in the midst of roller coaster screams, slurping of Butter Beer and being totally and completely drenched on the River Adventure ride....hmpff...they said "you may get wet or possibly soaked"....possibly?!

Anyhow, we are nearing the end of our trip and I have a few things I wanted to get out before I end this week.

So, the Three for Me this week are:

1. High School "acceptance" letter? - My oldest daughter has worked very hard over the years and as she entered 8th grade, she applied to the County magnet school. This school is considered to be a top notch high school and many kids apply....in fact, out of the 1550 applicants, only 280 will be granted entry. Of course, as luck would have it, and after a grueling application process, they decided to mail the "acceptance" letters out this week. Hello.....we are on Spring break. UGH! Luckily, my wonderful friend checked the mail for me on a daily basis and when it finally arrived, she expressed mailed it to us in Florida.

What did it say? Well, my daughter didn't want to open it until we were all together as a family, which meant we had the letter in hand for over half an hour before opening it. We trekked back into Universal Studio, located the rest of the clan and......

And she cried tears of joy....

YES! She got in. We are so happy for her and so very proud. Job well done geeky nerd....way to go!

2. Lost & Found - Ok, so you might be thinking what could possibly top an acceptance letter to an amazing high school, well.....if you read my poem from the other day, you will know that I experienced what all parents fear....losing their child in the crowd. So, the second thing I'm loving this week is finding Squid and having all three of my children. I came with three....thank God I'm leaving with three....I love you guys and next time, we are all wearing matching neon tops!

3. Harry Potter Land - I'm loving the fact that we are on vacation someplace warm and to top it off, we got to visit Harry Potter Land (twice). I love Harry Potter.....we got dizzy on the rides, purchased our wands from Ollivander's Wand Shop, bought a whole bunch of stuff in Hogsmeade and we had our fill of delicious Butter Beer. Here's to you Harry.

What Hogwarts house are you?

What are you loving this week?

    Encore! Another Liebster Award

    Let me reiterate something from a previous post ......thank you everyone for following me and reading my blog. This has been an amazing experience and I absolutely love it.

    I love, love, LOVE reading your responses and feedbacks to my various post and I absolutely enjoy corresponding with all the talented and amazing people that I have "met" in the blogosphere.

    Although I've only been doing this for a short while, I can say this ~ it sure ain't easy, but, I love it!

    Before I became a blogger, I never really gave it much thought. I didn't know what was truly involved, but now I'm learning.....posting takes a lot of thought and prep time and then if you're like me....some more thought and prep time, because I'm crazy like that.....and it's addictive.

    I have to admit that blogging has taken over a good portion of my life and my poor husband is definitely getting a bit jealous of the amount of time and attention I seem to be giving Mac (my constant companion). So, that is something that I need to work on.....got to find a balance between life and blogging. If you're a blogger, how do you balance your schedule?

    Of course, it doesn't help that I recently joined a few blog challenges (which I refuse to give up on)..... so life has been a little stressful ~ I'm trying to produce a poem a day using the alphabet as my theme.

    Got any suggestion for a topic starting with "H"?

    Anyhow, as someone who is still new to blogging, it's very flattering to know that my peers also like my blog. So, thank you Jess from The Wondering Brain for nominating me for my third Liebster Award!  I was recently nominated by two other blogs Second Chances Girl and Dina Farmer Photography. You can read my previous post to learn about the Liebster Award. Since I just recently participated in this, I will just go ahead and answer the questions from Jess. Here we go.....

    What does your blog name mean? A Dose of Jules means just that ~ a dose of me....a bit of my thoughts. Since I'm a pharmacist, I thought it would be a nice play on words.... I guess pharmacy was good for something. ha!

    What's your favorite day of the week? Friday, because that is one day that the kids have no activities after school and we can just hang.

    Where do you find inspiration for your blog? Wow, everywhere....I get inspired from conversations that I have with friends, things I hear and read, music....the list is endless.

    What's your biggest accomplishment? Raising three wonderful children

    What song represents you? On Fire by Switchfoot

    What's your favorite dish? Eggs Benedict....that's how I judge a diner....if I don't like your EB, I'm not coming back.

    What were you in high school - jock, geek, or reject? Ahhhh....I was a pseudo-jocky-geek.....go figure!

    Bath or Shower? Showers usually ~ and I take long hot ones, but if I really need to just relax, I will draw a bath.

    How do you relax? I love to watch movies and a few TV shows

    Wine or Beer? Neither, I'm a martini girl....I used to love French Martini, but right now I'm a Dirty Martini gal.

    If you had an opportunity to succeed, what would it be? A writer.

    Ok, you've just learned a few more things about me....lucky you! There's gonna be a pop quiz one of these days, so you better remember these answers.

    Thank you again for reading. Now, I've got to go and think.....I still need a poem for today....something with the letter "G".....hmmmmm

    Oh, if you are a martini drinker, what's your favorite type?

    [Nurture Photography Spring] Yellow

    {yellow}

    I'm joining Kristi of Live and Love Out Loud, Rebecca of Bumbles and Light and Project Alicia in their Spring Nurture Photography challenge.

    Three for Me

    Before I begin my three for me this week, I want to say thank you to all of my readers. I truly appreciate your comments both publicly and privately and for your support in all that I do on my blog.

    You may have noticed that I have recently been posting poems and photos as separate posts....this is because through my searches in the blogging world, I have come across a few challenges that I have decided to take part in - Project 52 (photo challenge), NaPoWriMo & A to Z (both writing challenges).

    I invite you to read my poems and visit other poets through the NaPoWriMo links I have included in my posts. But fair warning.....in case you haven't figured it out yet, my poems tend to be on the heavier side....somewhat sad....somewhat dark.... why? because that's just part of who I am.

    With that said. The Three for Me this week are:

    1. My son the artist - has been chosen to be the Artist of the Month at his middle school! YEAH! I'm so happy for him. Even though it's not like a BIG thing....it's still so nice to be recognized for something that you have a passion for....and he certainly has a passion for art. In fact, he came into this world with pencil in hand and with an artist's temperament to match.

    This kiddo will doodle and draw like there is no tomorrow....I usually have no problem with this unless its on a math test! (Yes....he doodled during a test and then told us he couldn't finish the last problems because he ran out of time....uh---- HELLO!!!) Anyhow, congrats honey on a job well done! We love you lots and can't wait to see what else you have in your imagination.

    2. My Hubby's Birthday!!!! Yes, today is the day.....forty-four years ago....that my hubby was born. I want to wish him a wonderful birthday. It's sad that he has to work today, but at least he will be home tonight so that we can all celebrate together. Hopefully, he won't be too tired and we can catch a family movie and eat fondue.....yes....FON-DUE!!!! It's kind of turned into our family's tradition to have both cheese and chocolate fondue for our birthday dinners....YUMMY!!!!

    3. Featured Photo!!! Yep! I a featured artist! Me?! As I stated above, I have joined a photography challenge hosted by Bella on Project 52. Every week, Bella posts a theme word and we have to submit a photo that represents that word....it's a lot of fun and a great way to meet people with the same interests. I'm still a novice when it comes to photography, so when I received an email from Bella asking to use my interpretation of "Layers" for her gallery, I was very flattered and honored. Thank you, thank you, thank you Bella for this recognition.....I love it....totally doing my happy dance right now!!! Yippeee!!!

    If you get a chance, stop by and see my photo in the Artist Spotlight!

    Well....that's it for my three this week. What are you loving this week? Please share because I would love to learn more about you.

    Am I Asking Too Much?

    Has there ever been a time in your life when you sit there and think....."What am I doing wrong?"

    (Ugh.....of course, the kids are still up at 10:20pm on a school night when they should be sleeping .....wait a second as I go and have a mommy dearest moment.....)

    ok ~ back

    Right, what am I doing wrong......Well, this little question has been plaguing my mind for awhile and the reason for this post is because I am trying to figure out if I'm being totally ridiculous. When I think of my parenting "skills", if you can call it that, part of me says....you're doing a great job.....you're a good mom. Then, when we hit one of those bumps in the road....the other part of me shakes her head and screams.....you're messing up....you're being too hard on them and you're going to ruin them forever!

    Am I? Do I expect too much from my children?

    In all honesty, I don't think that I do, but maybe my prospective is off. Maybe I need to re-evaluate the situation.

    My kids do a thousand and one things, to the point that I think I'm going to have a nervous breakdown, but these are activities that they love and enjoy, so.....I take them even though we are way overbooked.

    Then, when it's time to study, I expect them pull their weight. I expect them to complete their homework and projects on time and to study when they need to. If they need help, they know to ask for it, otherwise, I assume they are doing ok.....I'm not one to correct their homework, because I feel the teachers need to see what they are doing right or wrong....so, I do not check their assignments - I just remind them to get it all done.

    Some of my friends and family have suggested that maybe I'm too hard on the children when it comes to academics - that I expect to much - "Jules, they can't be perfect." The thing is, I'm not asking for perfection.

    Really, I'm not.

    I'm just asking for As. That's it. A simple A.

    I know you're thinking I'm a Tiger Mom. Well, here's a little background reading that might shed some light on that issue.

    I'm not the type of mom that puts her kids in all the top classes and demands straight As. I am, however, the type of mom who expects her kids to do well in the courses they are placed into by their teachers. Is this wrong?

    Am I being unreasonable? I don't think so..... If you can spend hours on the computer playing Mine Craft or watching My Little Pony or reruns of Victorious..... you can study a little bit and get at least a 90% on your test (see....I'm not even asking for 100%).

    But.....perhaps this is too much pressure.....maybe, I need to take a step back.....hmmmmm

    The jury is still out on this one.

    My take - you work hard....you play hard.

    I might expect a lot from them academically and we definitely burn the midnight oil here, but we also make sure that we make the most of our family time.....when we get them.

    What are your thoughts.....this is such a fine line.....how do you balance out your expectations?
